Frank W. Smart, MD, Diplomate, American Board of Internal Medicine and Subspecialty of Cardiovascular Disease, is a cardiovascular physician residing in Morristown, New Jersey who chairs the Department of Cardiovascular Medicine at Atlantic Health. For more than two decades Dr. Smart has led the cardiovascular community as a distinguished clinician and educator.

Prior to his appointment at Atlantic Health, Dr. Smart served as Chief of Cardiology Morristown Memorial Hospital and Vice-Chairman of Cardiovascular Medicine Atlantic Health System, Medical Director of Advanced Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation of the St. Luke’s Episcopal Hospital and The Texas Heart Institute, Director of the Tulane Cardiac Transplant Program, Associate Chief Section of Cardiology Tulane University School of Medicine, Director of Cardiology in the Cardiovascular Center of the Medical Center of Louisiana, Director of Medical Transplant Services Ochsner Multi-Organ Transplant Center and Medical Institutions, and Co-Section Head of Heart Failure and Cardiac Transplantation Ochsner Clinic Section of Cardiology at the Ochsner Transplant Center.

Dr. Smart’s esteemed academic appointments include Professor of Medicine Baylor College of Medicine, Associate Professor of Medicine Baylor College of Medicine, Clinical Professor of Medicine Baylor College of Medicine, Professor of Medicine Tulane University School of Medicine, and Associate Professor of Medicine Louisiana State University School of Medicine. His vital contribution to the field of medicine also includes a prolific body of writing, presentations, and research.

Recognized for his service to the medical community at-large, Dr. Smart received the Ochsner Fellows Alumni Association Outstanding Fellow Award, the American College of Cardiology Syntex and Bristol Travel Awards, the Baylor College of Medicine Richard Van Reet Award, the Hust B. Hatch Award for Outstanding Teacher of the Year, Top Doctors in New Orleans as granted by the New Orleans Magazine, Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare, HCA CCMN Cardiologist of theYear, National Registry of Who’s Who, Tulane University Cardiology Section Outstanding Teacher, Best Doctors in America for five years, Top Docs in Houston H Magazine for two years, and Outstanding Instructor in Cardiology at Baylor/St. Luke’s Hospital.

Born in New Orleans, Dr. Smart graduated from Southeastern Louisiana University and the Louisiana State University School of Medicine. His postgraduate work includes internship and residency training at the Ochsner Foundation Hospital in New Orleans and a cardiology fellowship as well as transplant research at Baylor College of Medicine in Houston.
